Kodiak Alaska Dolly Varden Fishing
Dolly Varden are Kodiak’s most prolific game fish
Dollies occur in almost every system on Kodiak Island. They are sea run so they can be caught from the tide flats, up through the streams to the mountain lakes. In still water they can be a leader shy, spooky target that requires an accurate and smooth presentation. In a stream riffle it’s hard not to catch them.
Dollies are accessed by traveling by boat from the lodge to nearby tide flats, estuaries and rivers. Or, by visiting the out camp. Once on the scene, fishing is done by wading and walking along the banks. At AlpenView we fly fish for Dollies, 3 to 5 weight rods with floating line work the best. 50 fish days are common. They average 1 pound and some have exceeded 5. Dollies are available from July through October.
