 Lodge, September 1 - 8, 2012

 Jim Jacobsen * Novato, CA

Ray Sirois * Shapleigh, ME

Jim Arneson * Kodiak, AK

Rick Snyder - Phoenix, AZ

Russ Shimizu - Santa Monica, CA

Crew: Molly Jones, Shawn Finn, Mickey and Dave Jones.

A nice day of trolling on Ugak Bay netted Jim this big silver salmon and Joe a fine king.

Dave leaves the CAPTAIN K on anchor and kayaks to the beach for a day of freshwater fishing.

 Camp, September 1 - 8, 2012

Per Lokkegaard - Barcelona, Spain

 Patrick Lokkegaard - Barcelona, Spain

Tedd Elich - Durham, NC

 Bridey Maxwell - Durham, NC

Crew: Molly Jones and Isaac Fritz.

Left to Right: Bridey, Tedd, Per and Patrick.

Bridey jumps a nice silver on the fly.

Isaac and Patrick display a ptarmigan they shot for a supper at the camp.

Left to right: Dave, Bridey, Tedd and Joe.

  Lodge, September 8 - 15, 2012

 Joe Car * Spencer, IN

 Tedd Elich - Durham, NC

 Bridey Maxwell - Durham, NC

Crew: Mickey and Dave Jones.

Joe and Dave loaded the smokehouse, one last time for the 2012 season, with a limit of big silvers.

Bridey and Tedd show off some of their jig fishing success.

Sun bathing sea lions.

We didn't get a great garden growing in 2012 because we bounced between Kodiak, the out camp and the lodge. Not enough time in one place. Mickey did succeed in growing one great cucumber!

Left to right: Chris and John.

 Camp, September 8 - 15, 2012

 John Legakis - Davis, CA

 Chris Unkel - Davis, CA

Crew: Isaac Fritz.

John displays a big Ayakulik silver salmon.
The Ayakulik was a big river in the fall of 2012. With Isaac's help, Chris and John took advantage of the big schools of bright silvers that came in with the high water.

Captain Isaac in the jet boat.

The Great Flood Of 2012
During the week of September 15 - 22, 2012 The Ayakulik crested with the highest water since 1988. Isaac and his friend, Allie were on hand to see it all. During the peak of the high water, Allie and Isaac evacuated the main camp onto a spike camp on higher ground. Their spike camp is visible in the lower center of this picture.

The camp was flooded to a water height of 8" in the main tent. Allie and Isaac did a great job of getting equipment raised up on cots, tables and shelves to protect it from the flood waters. Their efforts were essential in allowing the camp to re-open the following week.

Isaac and Allie approach the camp from up-stream. It's hard to believe they are on the Ayakulik River. It looks like a lake.

Left to right: Isaac, Balen, Daniel, Lou, Jim and Chris.

 Camp, September 22 - 29, 2012

 Chris Bardis - Mather, CA

  Lou Bardis - Mather, CA

Belan Wagner - Sacramento, CA

Jim Kassis - Sacramento, CA

Daniel

Crew: Dave Jones, Greg Wilson and Isaac Fritz.

Chris and Lou display Lou's first ever Ayakulik steelhead.
Chris, Lou, Balen and Jim are veterans of many steelheading trips on the Karluk River.

Jim navigates a snow covered walkway.
Kodiak Island does not always give up its treasures without a fight!

By the fall season, the bears have fed well on salmon and lush vegetation for several months. They will need the fat to carry them through the winter in their dens. Over their winter sleep they can lose 20% of their body weight.

After several seasons of service, the burning barrel was getting a bit tired. Shawn sent us out a new one.

 Camp, Sept. 29 - Oct 6, 2012

Eric Jensen * Bend, OR

Bob Berti * Diamond Springs, CA

Ted Berti * Knutsford, BC

Cliff Rackham * Pollok Pines, CA

Pat Steed * Eden, NC

Crew: Dave Jones, Greg Wilson and Isaac Fritz.

Clockwise from lower left: Greg, Cliff, Ted, Bob, Pat, Isaac and Eric.

Flat calm, sunny, no bugs and a fish on every cast make up a brochure day.

The high water forced some different tactics. Pat hooked this steelhead while Spey casting from the boat.

Two years in a row!
Cliff landed this 33" buck, the largest of the 2012 season. Cliff also landed the big steelhead in 2011.

 Camp, October 6 - 13, 2012

Don Andrews * Denver, CO

Dennis Harper - Ventura, CA

Ray Harper - Bakersfield, CA

Crew: Dave Jones, Greg Wilson and Isaac Fritz.

Standing, left to right: Ray, Dennis, Don, Greg and Isaac.
Kneeling: Dave.

After six years of service cooking on submarines in the US Navy, Greg has honed his skills. This salad, featuring seared duck breast, is typical of his work.

Greg instructs Dennis in the typical serving of salmon roe.

Isaac and Ray enjoy some surprisingly fine October weather.

Don displays one of his many steelhead.
Don has fished out of the camp, chasing steelhead, for 13 consecutive seasons. 2000 - 2012. Over the years he has honed his skills and learned the river. He landed 13 steelhead during this trip while faced with the highest of river conditions. The most of any angler in the 2012 season.

Ray loads up a Spey rod on a foggy morning. The Spey rod is a fantastic tool for making long casts while wading close to the bank.

Standing, left to right: Greg and Dave.
Kneeling: Patrick, Isaac, Ole and Drew.

Camp Break-down
October 6 - 12, 2012

Crew: Isaac, Dave, Greg, Drew, Ole and Patrick.

Isaac with a nice blacktail.
During the job of dismantling the camp, we took time off to do a little buck hunting. The conditions were perfect and we all had success.

Dave and Drew with the two "big boys". Both were taken within 50 yards of each other.

The Ayakulik River and Red Lake Creek from high on Mt. Get-to-the-Top. Note that there are only two tents left standing at camp.

Drew uses his rangefinder to help Patrick dial in on a buck at 480 yards.

Patrick (center) made the shot!

The camp is buttoned up and the crew awaits their airplane.

A sow and cub nap in one of the few remaining green patches.

 Lodge, Oct. 31 - Nov. 6, 2012

Bill Murphy - Valdez, AK

Judith Parris - Valdez, AK

Crew: Dave and Mickey Jones.

Left to right: Judith, Bill, Mickey and Dave.

Dave got one.
Bill and Judith were at the lodge for a deer hunt. After dropping them off at the hunting site of their choice, Dave did some water fowl hunting.

Boots checks out the goose.
